Here’s a suggestion: Stop stressing out about moving and consider using a moving pod the next time you’re on the move.
Not sure what I’m talking about?
Good. That’s what this article is all about. I’m going to tell you what a moving pod is, how it works, and the pros and cons of using one.
Let’s get started…
So what is a moving pod and what does it look like? Here’s a pic… look familiar?
You’ve probably seen one of these boxes in your neighborhood or on the streets of your city.
So how do they work?
The process is actually pretty simple. There are quite a few moving container companies (so do your research in finding one), but they all usually follow a simple 5-step process.
Step 1: Deliver container to your home
After you choose a company to work with, your moving container will be delivered to your home…. How nice is THAT!?
This means you don’t have to hustle down to the truck lot, stand in a weird room full of boxes and tape, and pick up your “reserved” moving truck that’s usually bigger or smaller than you thought it was going to be. On top of the convenience of curbside service, you don’t have to worry about driving a ginormous truck.
Step 2: Fill the container at your own pace
This step is nice because you can take your time packing your moving pod. You no longer have to worry about getting everything done before it’s time to return the truck to the lot or refill it with gas.
Ok, but how long do they really give you to pack up your moving pod?
How long you can keep the pod in front of your home is up to the company you choose to work with. Depending on your needs, you’ll want to ask for clarification. Also, if you live in an urban setting, don’t forget about the rules and regulations in your city on leaving a giant tin box on the street if you don’t have a driveway to put it in.
Organizing Tip: Read up on how to pack a moving container (ah-hem, or hire a professional organizer to do it for you!) to ensure everything is transferred safely and doesn’t move around or break during transport.
Step 3: Call for pick-up
Ring, ring… yes, my pod is ready for pick-up. Thank you.
Wow. THAT was exhausting.
That’s if for Step 3. They will schedule a time to come pick up your moving pod right from in front of your house!
Step 4: Deliver container to determined location (or store at facility)
My moving pod magically appears at my new home on the other side of the country and that’s it??
Yep. That’s it.
You also have the option of storing your packed moving pod (which is pretty cool) if there’s a gap in time between Point A and Point B.
Ok, that ‘s cool, but what if I need something from my container while it’s in storage?
Again, that’s something you’ll want to talk to your company about (and be mindful of how much time you’ll need to keep your pod in storage because the cost can add up). For the most part, you can retrieve something if you need it from your pod with a simple phone call. That being said, you will probably want to keep your valuables and the everyday things you might need with you. I recommend preparing for any big move with a moving survival kit; planning ahead is always the best course of action.
Step 5: Unpack at your leisure (or hire a professional organizer to do it!)
Voila! That’s it! You’ve made it to the fifth and final step. You can now take your time unpacking just like you did when you were packing up your moving pod.
And THAT’S how moving pods are making the world a better place! Who knew?
If this article wasn’t enough and you want further help navigating the moving process, give me a call! I can help you figure out what your best options are (moving pod, moving company, friend’s truck) and help streamline the packing and unpacking process, or even organize your moving pod for you!
